Crochet Pattern
Operation Beanie is still collecting in 2008 & beyond!
(Update 4/19/08) We have received emails (info@aoiisandiego.org) from you asking if we are still collecting for the project. To date, Operation Beanie has collect 44,000 beanies and it is growing everyday. Miki of California Yarn has the goal of Operation Beanie donating 1 million beanies! Miki also has information about the project posted on www.operationbeanies.org so you may check there for updates as well.)
Miki created this pattern especially for Operation Beanie. Please help the project by making the beanies for servicemen and service women. Learn more about thsi project by clicking on "home" on your left.
Project Requirements
You will need approximately 4 to 6 ounces of yarn. The yarn requirement depends on the thickness of the yarn.
Crochet hooks
- Sizes F or G for sport weight yarns
- Sizes H or I for worsted weight yarn
- Sizez J or K for chunky weight yarn
Project Pattern
Again, you must check how you crochet with the yarn you use and choose the correct hook. Just remember you are making a beanie. The pattern is written for the chunky yarn.
Fill in appropriate numbers for the yarn you choose in provided ( ). The Beanie is worked top down.

Ch 5, Slip st. in first ch to form a circle. |

Row 1:
|
Ch2, make 9 dc in a circle. 10dcs. Sl St on ch 2 to connect. (12 dc for knitting worsted ), (14 dc for sport).

Row 2:
|
Ch 2, make 1 dc in same st.* make 2 dc in next st * Repeat * * around. 20 dcs. Sl St on ch 2 to connect. (24 dc for knitting worsted ), (28 dc for sport).

Row 3:
|
Ch 2, make 2 dc in next st. * make 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st. * Repeat * * around. Sl St on ch 2 to connect. 30 dcs. (35 dc for knitting worsted ), (42 dc for sport).

Row 4:
|
Ch 2, make 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st. * make 1 dc each in next 2 dc, make 2 dc in next dc * Repeat * * around. Sl St on ch 2 to connect. 40 dcs (48 dc for knitting worsted), (56 dc for sport).
At this point check the size of the beanie. If you want to make bigger, go on to row 5.

Row 5:
|
Ch 2, make 1 dc each in next 2 dc, make 2 dc in next st. * make 1 dc each in next 3 dc and make 2 dc in next st * Repeat * * around. 50 dcs, (60 dc for knitting worsted), (70 dc for sport).

If you need to make bigger than now go around once more to 60dcs. When you use fine yarn you make need more sts around to make it big enough. Always check size of beanie. |

Now, work even with the established sts round and round to get about 8 to 9 inches. |

Go around 1 row of single crochet and finish off. |
